There was a time when, in general, society encouraged moral choices, and expected certain standards of faith, acceptance, work, service, honesty, and other characteristics. It does not anymore. This means that the tide has turned. What was once a behavior that would earn you scorn, is now just "another choice", or even something that is held up in a positive light. If you choose things that require strength and character, you will be choosing the less popular choice. Popularity has never been a yardstick by which any truly important choice should be measured. Even in the days when some things were more strongly supported, others were not. I mean, I'd certainly not have wanted to live in the day when women were considered to be incapable of intellectual accomplishment! Character has always required that you live by your conscience, and not by the unreasonable dictates of society or tradition, no matter what those might be. This is not purely a religious site. But there must be some standard, some determining way to understand which set of moral choices is "right", and which set is "wrong". Some way for us to know when our society is being progressive, and when it is merely being weak and giving in to the baser nature that resides in all of us. The final determiner, must, I believe, be God. Any choice, no matter how unpopular, no matter how difficult, faces the same judgment in the end, and that is before the Lord. If all is right in our lives between ourselves and God, then all the rest ceases to matter. If all is not right, then no manner of protestation will justify our selfishness or greed. And I believe that those standards will hold up to common sense, and that statistics can, and will, bear up the wisdom of supporting choices that strengthen the family, truly enhance a sense of self-worth, and which improve our society as a whole.
