It is all too frequent now to try to avoid the challenge of raising a special needs child. I remember all my life being very puzzled as pregnant women would declare, "I don't care if it is a boy or a girl, as long as its healthy!" I always wondered what that had to do with anything. What would they do if it were not? Now people are not even willing to
find that out. Termination occurs to children who present the prenatal
prospect of unexpected challenges. Few people possess the character
and faith to choose THAT hard road. Many children are given up for
I have profound respect for anyone who volunteers to care for a special needs child, no matter how that choice comes about. Sometimes it is a thought, before a child is even conceived. Sometimes it is a deliberate choice during the pregnancy. Sometimes it is a choice to take on the special needs child of someone else, through fostering or adoption. Just look at this face, and try to persuade me that there are not unique joys and rewards to parents who choose such a child!
