Self-Care

Why choose to exercise, eat right, and make responsible health care choices to meet specific needs when there are so many excuses not to? It takes strong character to care well for one's body, to preserve one's mental health, to choose a life of growth and learning.

It can be particularly challenging to manage chronic disease, especially when that entails long lists of limitations. It is not hard to keep tight control of a diet for a few weeks, but when the realization sinks in that you may never be allowed to ever have certain things, and that the new restrictions must become a way of life, it can be very difficult to adjust.

And many people who do are treated shamefully by others. The parent who teaches their child to control diabetes will also often be vilified for not allowing the child to have sweets, as though any "good" parent would never tell their child they could not have another piece of cake or scoop of ice cream!

It is also undoubtedly easier to take care of oneself when you feel like it matters to someone else. During a difficult pregnancy, when another life directly depends on your choices, it is far easier to control a diet or observe strict limitations - and there is always the fact that it is just temporary. But for single people living alone, or other people who feel like their actions affect only themselves, there is less encouragement on a daily basis to stick to it.
