Marriage

In our society, marriage is no longer even "until death do us part". It is often perceived of as more of an "until I decide I don't want to anymore" sort of thing. It takes rare courage and strength to make the necessary changes to one's self, to go back and make the effort to forgive, and to learn to love again.

In a marriage it is important to be kind to your spouse because of who you are, rather than because you feel they deserve it or not. It is important to treat them as a spouse, and do the little things incumbent in that role, even when things are hard and tense between you. This does not mean encouraging a hurtful behavior, it simply means you make an effort aside from the hurtful behaviors. If no change is made, then there will be no reason for hearts to mend.

It is also impossible to change a partner. You can only change yourself, and how you respond to them. You can look for the good. You can focus on progress even if it is painfully slow. And you can choose to love, even if your spouse does not. It may not avoid a painful break in the end, but at least you can know with a clear conscience that you did not make it worse than it had to be.
